Scottish full back previews tomorrow’s game against Dundee United.

Having started his career in his native Scotland, Stephen Crainey said he knows just how seriously tomorrow’s opponents Dundee United will approach the game and the full back believes Latics are ready to give as good as they get.

“Teams who come down from Scotland to play English teams in pre-season definitely don’t want to play second best.

“Having played up in Scotland, I’ve always known Dundee United to be a good side and they’ll give their all tomorrow, but we want to do that at the same time as well.

“The mentality of Scottish teams is that they give their all no matter who they’re playing against so it’s going to be a good intensity in tomorrow’s game.”

With the game coming exactly a week before the start of Latics’ Sky Bet Championship season, Crainey expressed that Dundee United should prove to be a well suited opposition ahead of the trip to Barnsley on August 3.

“The game is going to be a natural progression from the other friendlies we’ve played and it will put us in a good place ahead of the season.

“Oakwell is a really tough place to go and we’ll be looking to go there with the right mind set and make sure that we start the season with three points.

“It’s all been about getting the fitness up and playing in as many games as possible before that opening day game.”

Crainey added that preparations are running smoothly and he credited that to his manager Owen Coyle:

“The manager’s done a great job in making sure we’re really ready and our preparation has put us in good shape for the start of the season.

“I’ve played in a few positions for him in pre-season but the way I look at it is that I’ll be ready for whatever the gaffer wants me to do as long as I’m fit and available.”

On settling into the squad Crainey added:

“I’m really enjoying my time here so far and the good thing I’ve noticed here is that it’s a great bunch of boys.

“There’s real team spirit and hopefully we can use that to our advantage throughout the season.”
