Latics continue their journey of American discovery with their second outing of the week, facing 3rd Division side Dayton Dutch Lions, who play in the USL Professional Division, and have strong links with Dutch side FC Twente.

Owen Coyle will be looking to increase playing time fitness for as many of the squad as possible and says he is looking for the same application as the team showed last Saturday against Columbus Crew.

“It doesn’t matter who we face,” he said, “when my players put on a shirt with a Wigan Athletic crest on it, I demand a certain level of performance and this is a message I will drill into the players.

“Yes, the object of this week is to work on our fitness in readiness for August 3, but I also demand a standard of professionalism which is the key to everything we are trying to achieve. I need competition for places in every department to spur the best out of the players.

”Dayton will be looking for a scalp and we need to be ready for that. So far I have been really impressed with the levels shown by the players and I will be expecting that to rise again tonight.”

Thomas Rogne will miss out again with a calf strain and Coyle explained that it was not worth the risk of playing him: “Thomas is progressing nicely, working hard in the gym but we need to wait until he is 100% before putting him in a match situation, otherwise we could aggravate the injury. He worked really hard over the summer for Norway in the Under 21 Championships and perhaps he is just paying for that now a little. But he is improving day by day and we will reassess things before Friday’s game.”

With the squad thin on the ground in terms of defenders, that area should see a similar line up from Saturday, James Perch, Emmerson Boyce, Stephen Crainey and Adam Buxton being the only recognised defenders in the squad. In every other department, however, Coyle has a full squad available and there could be changes from Saturday.
