Defender can’t wait to get started and challenge for place in team

Stephen Crainey said that after a long day finalising his move to Wigan Athletic he’s looking forward to beginning pre-season training and competing for a place in the team.

The former Celtic, Leeds United and Blackpool defender is excited to have started a new chapter in his career and with the help of the fans hopes to bring success to the DW Stadium, saying:

“It was a long day, but thankfully it’s all sorted now and I can focus on being a Wigan Athletic player.

“It’s a big challenge for me after six good years at Blackpool, but I felt the time was right to move on and look for a new challenge at this stage in my career. I’ve got that here and I’m looking forward to getting started.

“I’ve played at the DW Stadium a few times in the past so I know how much the fans get behind their team, and we’re going to need that this season if we’re going to put together some big performances.

“There will be a lot of players coming in over the next few weeks, and the competition to get into the team on a matchday is going to be fierce, but I’m up for that challenge.”

The 32-year-old spent the last six years at Blackpool, making over 200 league appearances, and admitted the decision to move on was tough but right:

“It was tough saying goodbye to Bloomfield Road because I probably spent the best years of my career at Blackpool; winning promotion and playing in the Premier League, and playing another playoff Final the following season.

“They were very happy times that I’ll always remember, but now it’s time to move on and start the next part of my career here at Wigan Athletic.”
