Owen Coyle says Wigan Athletic is the right place for him and wants to make the fans proud.
Giving his first video interview since becoming Wigan Athletic manager, Owen Coyle told Latics Player that he has a desire to lead an exciting Latics team and one that the fans can remain proud of.
The 46-year-old said:
“My message to the fans is to come and support your team because we will endeavour to give you a team you will be proud of, a team that’s exciting and more importantly a team that can score goals while maintaining a strong defence at the same time.
“It’s brilliant to be named Wigan Athletic manager and I’m absolutely delighted to have been given this opportunity.
“I’m looking forward to doing everything in my power to get the club back into the Premier League because that’s where everybody wants to be.”
After meeting with Chairman Dave Whelan, Coyle said he knew that the club was the right place to be through the passion already shown inside and out.
“Anybody who knows the Chairman knows how passionate he is about football and Wigan Athletic and for me that was a huge thing in coming here.
“He’s very driven and he wants the best for the football club which I was really struck by.
“I know a lot about the club from my time in the North West and I know that the club’s fans are very passionate about being in the Premier League so that has to be our aim.”
Eager to get going straight away the former striker said:
“I wish we were out on the training pitch tomorrow because I’m that excited to start working with the group.
“I’m very passionate about getting the best out of the players here but ultimately I want them to be doing that with a smile on their faces as well.
“I want the fans to know that the players are representative of them and that they’ll give every ounce of effort to match the standard that you see from the stands each week.”
The new manager also expressed his aim to keep the core of the squad together whilst bringing the right faces into the club.
“We’ve lost a few players who were out of contract and those going back to their parent clubs so it’s important that we add to the squad.
“The main thing is that we add quality rather than quantity.
“We need to add that quality to the nucleus of very good players that are already here and that’s something I’ve been looking into already, touching base with a few people and looking to bring the right players in.”
