Midfielder stresses importance of supporters during FA Cup run.

“Our supporters were outstanding,” said Shaun Maloney.

“I’ve got to stress that they’ve been brilliant all the way through the cup campaign and it has started to rub off on them when we play in the league at home as well where we’ve struggled a bit.

“At the end of the game we got a great reception from then and we wanted to show our appreciation too, but we also got a good reception from the Everton fans at the end as well which is something very rare in football.”

After just 11 minutes it was Maloney who set the tone for the afternoon yesterday when his brilliant curling effort came back off the inside of the post behind a stranded Jan Mucha in the Everton goal.

The Scotsman said it was important not to dwell on the chance and for the team to kick on as they did.

“Sometimes they go in and sometimes they don’t but that’s life, it would have been nice to score but it didn’t matter in the end.

“It was early in the game so I didn’t dwell on it, it was just a shame it came back out and didn’t go in.”

Latics’ three goals in four minutes came as a surprise to Maloney but, he praised the overall performance and defensive solidity as well.

He said:

“The goals obviously won us the game but I think the way we performed in general was definitely worthy of the result.

“The way we defended was arguably the most pleasing thing after last week’s result and the clean sheet is a major plus for us.

“The speed of the three goals was unexpected and once the second and third goals went in we just had the mind set of making sure it was 3-0 at half time.”
