It may have been a friendly at Blackburn Rovers' Brockhall training ground, but that didn't stop an action packed afternoon with plenty of talking points along the way, as Joey Johnson gave Latics the lead from the spot, Mike Pollitt saved a penalty and Ivan Ramis continued his progression back from injury.
First team experience was available to John Henry in the form of Pollitt and Ramis, alongside Danny Redmond, Jordan Mustoe and Nouha Dicko, with Tim Chow making his return to action following injury as he completed 90 minutes.
Latics took the initiative and had the upper hand throughout the majority of the game, but they took a while to really get going, despite early chances for Dicko and Chow, with the latter having a diving header saved at point blank range after he got onto the end of an Adam Buxton cross.
Buxton himself then nearly opened the scoring when his outside of the right foot drive from the edge of the area narrowly missed the top left corner.
Before the break the solid Ramis had a header saved from a corner and Redmond shot over from range, leaving Latics in a good position going into the second half.
Unfortunately for Latics they lost Redmond at the start of the second half as he limped off with a knee injury and was replaced by the side's top goal scorer Guillermo Andres.
Moments after the change Latics hit the cross bar through trialist striker Patrick Antelmi, who pulled a Dicko cross out of the air in the centre of the area before striking the woodwork.
Chow followed it in with an effort of his own, but a mix up with Johnson took away most of the power from his shot.
It wasn't long though until Latics finally grabbed their deserved lead, when Buxton's marauding from right back earned his side a penalty with Joey Johnson coolly converting as sent the 'keeper the wrong way, tucking the ball into the bottom right corner.
Three minutes later Latics found themselves on the wrong end of the game's second spot kick, when Darragh Lenihan went over the outstretched leg of Chow, but step up veteran stopper Mike Pollitt to beat away Lenhian solid take to safety.
The 41-year-old goalkeeper was called into action moments later saving low at his left post from Jordan Slew, but there was nothing he could do on 72 minutes when Blackburn grabbed a fortunate equaliser.
Buxton gave away possession down Latics' right and Slew stole in to shoot with his effort taking a wicked deflection, wrong footing Pollitt and looping over his head for 1-1.
Ryan Jennings made a late substitute appearance returning from injury, adding bite to Latics attack for the final ten minutes, but neither his shot wide nor Antelmi's acrobatic effort could put Latics back in front as they saw the game out on level terms.
Latics: Pollitt, Buxton (Langley 84), Mustoe, Wilson, Ramis, Ainscough (Meadows 65), Dicko, Chow, Antelmi, Johnson (Jennings 80), Redmond (Andres 53)
