Latics kick off Central League cup with a win thanks to Andres and Johnson.

Davies 80

Andres 16
Johnson 24

It was a perfect start for Latics in the group stage of the Central League Cup as they claimed all three points courtesy of first half goals from Joey Johnson and top goal scorer Guillermo Andres.

Earlier in the month Latics travelled to Prenton Park to take on Tranmere, but today's game took place at local club Cammell Laird.

It wasn't quite the 4-1 victory claimed on that day, but Latics soon got firing when Andres opened the scoring on 16 minutes with a fine strike from outside the penalty area.

Johnson made it 2-0 shortly after as Latics took advantage of their numbers in attack as he tapped home a half cleared corner kick from close range.

With 10 minutes remaining Liam Davies followed up to score after Cole Stockton was denied by Marko Marosi, giving Latics a less than comfortable score line to see the game out with.

John Henry's side held on though, securing a double over Tranmere and opening their Central League Cup account with a victory.

Latics will also face Morecambe, Fleetwood Town and Carlisle United in the group stage of the competition.

Tranmere: Mooney, Morris, Phillips, Boland, Horwood, Newton, Rowe, Shackleton, Riley, Davies, Stockton

Latics: Marosi, Buxton, Mustoe, Wilson, Langley, Meadows, Jennings, Redmond, Antelmi, Andres, Johnson
