Zulte Waregem forward Habib Habibou recalls playing for Leeds at Robin Park Arena and gives his view on Matchday 5.
Following the press conference from Zulte Waregem Head Coach Francky Dury and Habib Habibou, the Central African Republic born forward took time to speak to wiganathletic.com.
The former Leeds United loanee has tasted action in England against Latics before, when he took on the Development Squad in March during his six month stay at Elland Road.
Habibou recalls what it was like to play at Robin Park Arena against Latics in a 2-2 draw, saying:
“Of course I remember the game and coming to Wigan (pictured).
“It was early in my loan at Leeds United and I was getting games for fitness in the reserve team because I had an injury.
“I needed to play some games and then I was looking forward to returning to Belgium so that I could play with the team in Europe, it’s a big coincidence that the Europa League has brought me back to Wigan.”
“I remember Callum McManaman from that game, he’s a very good player,” added Habibou.
McManaman was the only one of the current Latics first team to feature on that day and Habibou said he still holds him in high regard:
“He was so quick with the ball at his feet, I remember that he caused the team a lot of problems and it’s not surprising to see that he’s now a regular in the first team.
“I think he is one of the best players in the team, but we’ve made sure that we know how to stop him.”
Focussing on Matchday 5 Habibou said he expects a tough test:
“Wigan Athletic are a very good team and we are happy coming here and facing a strong side.
“It’s a big game and one which I think the winning team will go through to the knockout stages.
“It will not be easy for us because you have only lost one game at home all season, but we hope that we can win so that we go into our final game in a good position.”
