Europa League Matchday 5 and qualification is in sight for Latics
Wigan Athletic v Zulte Waregem
Europa League, Group D - Matchday 5
Thursday 28 November 2013, kick off 8.05pm
Wigan Athletic Stadium
Owen Coyle’s side have a great opportunity to progress to the knock-out stage of the competition in front of a home crowd on Thursday night. Providing Maribor fail to beat Rubin Kazan in Russia, a win for Latics would see them into the last 32.
Zulte Waregem who currently sit 2nd in their domestic league, and are in good form with only one defeat in their last 10 league games. They’re also the second highest scorers in the league with 34 goals in 16 games – an average of over 2 goals per game.
It would appear to be up to Wigan to maintain a pretty impressive record of English clubs against Belgian clubs with no Belgian side having recorded a European victory against an English team in the last nine attempts. More ominously perhaps for Waregem – no Belgian side has beaten an English team away in the last 29 attempts.
Scott Carson remains on the sidelines but has stepped up his recovery to include some work on the training pitch. Juan Carlos Garcia is the only new injury concern for manager Owen Coyle, the Honduran returned from international duty high ankle strain – 6 weeks the initial estimate of how long he’ll be missing.

Europa League, Group D – Matchday 1
Thursday 19 September 2013
On a wet night in Belgium on Latics’ European debut the two sides fought out a competitive goalless draw with the best chance on the night falling to James McArthur who struck the outside of the post with his strike from the edge of the box early on in the game.
