Emmerson Boyce and Leon Barnett help to referee girls tournament
Girls entering a football tournament last week had to be on their best behaviour on the pitch when Latics defenders Emmerson Boyce and Leon Barnett donned whistles to help referee some of the matches.
The Under 13 competition featured 15 teams from 11 secondary schools in Wigan and was organised by Wigan Athletic Community Trust as part of the Football League Girls Cup competition.
As well as helping to referee the matches Emmerson and Leon signed autographs for the players and also had a go at the Trust’s inflatable speed gun challenge which is used outside the DW Stadium on a match day.
St Mary’s High School from Astley were crowned champions when they beat Standish High School 2-1, scoring the winning goal with the last kick of the game.
They will now represent Wigan Athletic in a regional competition with the chance to go on and play in the national finals at Wembley Stadium.
Wigan Athletic Community Trust has just launched a new football programme to encourage more women and girls to take part in football.
