Rubin Kazan will present Wigan Athletic’s toughest test of the Europa League campaign so far when they arrive in Wigan on Thursday evening. The game is the first of a double header against the Russian Premier League side with the reverse fixture taking place at the beginning of November.
The game has parallels with the last Europa League fixture when Latics were coming off the back of a disappointing result in the league and no doubt Owen Coyle will be hoping that the game can provide his side with a confidence boost heading into Sunday’s game at the Valley on Sunday, as the NK Maribor game did for the home game against Blackburn Rovers three weeks ago.
Rubin, managed by Kurban Berdyev and who is also the club's Vice-President, are competing in a UEFA group stage for the fifth straight season; they transferred from the UEFA Champions League to the UEFA Europa League round of 32 at the end of the autumn in 2009 and 2010 and then made it through the UEFA Europa League group stage in the last two seasons.
Rubin won 4-0 at home against Zulte Waregem on matchday two – their biggest win in European club competition. They had matched their biggest margin of victory on the road on matchday one when they triumphed 5-2 at Maribor.
Since their 3-1 loss at Chelsea last season, Rubin have been on a continental winning-streak that now extends to nine games.
Rubin Kazan have faced English opposition on four previous occasions winning two of their four games beating Chelsea and Tottenham.
