*Burnley win 7-6 on penalties.
A dramatic penalty shootout saw Latics eliminated from the Under 21 Premier League Cup as Burnley won 7-6 following a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes.
Jamie Frost netted the winning penalty for the hosts at Turf Moor, but they could have seen victory snatched away from them earlier on, as Latics had two extra time efforts cleared of the line, with the final one coming in the first minute of stoppage time.
It was a Latics side that included first team squad members Lee Nicholls, Nouha Dicko, Daniel Redmond and Adam Buxton, intent on a solid performance in the first ever Under 21 Premier League Cup game for the club.
An early chance after just 11 minutes could have given Latics the perfect start under the bright floodlights of Turf Moor as Ryan Meadows skipped to the by-line on the right side, cutting the ball back for Dicko at the front post, but Burnley stopper Alex Cisak was quick off his line to block the first time shot.
Seven minutes later Lee Nicholls was forced into a top save of his own, when Latics lost possession in their own half, with the host's Jamie Frost attacking down the right.
The pacey forward skipped beyond Rob Kiernan, who got back into position to block the eventual shot, it wrong footed Nicholls though and looked to be heading into the bottom corner, only for the 'keeper to spring back across his line and tip the ball away for a corner.
It was a cagey first half, with neither side wanting to lose the game for obvious reasons.
Adam Buxton came close twice for Latics as they tried to force the issue the more the game went on, first striking from 30 yards as a deflection almost re-directed it into the bottom corner.
He then cross from wide right, only to see it drift to the back post and bounce down off the cross bar with Cisak beaten all ends up.
The stalemate was set to continue, but more half chances came, with Buxton volleying from range and Nicholls' keeping Latics in the game with two consecutive saves around the hour mark.
After a tense 45 minutes, Dicko almost stole the game in the second minute of injury time when he got onto the end of a Hamilton cross, but could only direct the ball just wide.
Extra time brought about a change in the winds as Burnley began to dominate, but it was Latics who carved out the best chances, twice seeing the ball cleared off the line.
On 107 minutes substitute Sam Cosgrove headed a corner goalwards, only for Frost to clear as he positioned himself perfectly on the back post.
The second escape for the hosts came in the first minute of second half injury time in extra time, as Dicko attacked down the right to feed Cosgrove into the area, he pulled the ball back to Joey Johnso who ran too far ahead of the ball, but Luke Ainscough was perfectly placed to follow the ball in, only for Alex Coleman to get back behind his goalkeeper and boot the ball away.
A dramatic finish to the 120 minutes signalled for a dramatic penalty shootout, with Latics taking first and missing as Buxton slipped to send the ball over the bar.
Hewitt put Burnley 1-0 up with both teams having taken a penalty each, Kiernan levelled for Latics, with Stock scoring Burnley's second and Johnson equalising once more.
At 2-2 Nicholls saved from Luke Gallagher, with Dicko looking to give Latics the lead, only for Cisak to stop him.
Latics did take the lead as Cosgrove thumped in his penalty following Kevin Long's cross bar hit for the hosts.
The scoring continued and with Coleman levelling it a 6-6 with the 16th penalty of the shootout, Latics full back Mayowa Balogun stepped up with Cisak saving his spot kick, allowing Frost the opportunity to win the game.
Frost took his chance to finish the game as he scored to make it 7-6 and send Burnley through to the second round of the Under 21 Premier League Cup.
