Latics taste defeat in friendly at Christopher Park.

Bradley 57

A cagey game at Christopher Park ended in defeat for Latics as an experience Rotherham United side took advantage just before the hour mark, with right back Mark Bradley turning in a Matt Tubbs cross.

Latics included a number of Under 18 players in the match squad, with striker Sam Cosgrove playing 90 minute and Matty Hamilton and Christian Mather featuring from the bench.

There were few cutting edge chances for either side in the game, but Latics started brightly with some intelligent passing on the edge of the Rotherham area.

At the other end the partnership of Josh Langley and Rob Kiernan kept the Millers at bay during the first half, with the talents of experienced forwards such as Tubbs and Danny Hylton being extinguished.

Cosgrove's physicality caused the Rotherham defence a few issues, but his only efforts on goal were cut to half chances and dragged shots.

One lapse in defending cost Latics on 57 minutes when in a tight game, Rotherham's Bradley was allowed to sneak in behind the defence to turn in a Tubbs cross from the left side.

Four minutes later Latics' centre back Kiernan came close to equalising when he headed a Jordan Mustoe free kick over the bar, but Latics couldn't work themselves enough chances to pull level, despite the introduction of Matty Hamilton who added bite to the front line.

As the game came to and end, Mustoe flashed a left footed drive just wide of the right post and Latics' goalkeeper Marko Marosi was called into action with a pouncing to block Tubbs who attempted to turn in a drifting corner at the back post.

Latics will be back in Central League action next week when they travel to Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday 1 October.
