Latics work hard for win with Cosgrove free kick the difference.

Cosgrove 63

Another impressive defensive display saw Latics pick up the rewards this time out as John Doolan's side kept their second clean sheet in a row, with striker Sam Cosgrove thumping in a decisive free kick just after the hour mark.

The first half display was efficient from Latics, with the defensive partnership of Adam Anson and Sean Harrison continuing to blossom.

Chances were limited until the second half when Cosgrove began his mission to score the goals only game, seeing a long range effort fly wide before Burnley goalkeeper Connor Mitchell tipped a free kick around the post.

Mitchell could do nothing about Cosgrove's next set piece, with Latics' top goal scorer netting his fifth of the season as he smashed the ball into the top corner, giving his side a deserved lead.

With just under 30 minutes remaining in the game, Latics still had to work hard for the three points, something which delighted their manager John Doolan:

"The lads put in a very good performance and I was impressed from the first minute right up to the final whistle.

"We pressed them excellently in the first half and then in the second half we started to create going forwards.

"Matty Hamilton and Sam (Cosgrove) continued to build on their understanding of each other's game up front and the two central defenders were really solid.

"The lads deserve a win after their recent performances and now we can progress even more."
