Defensive improvements for Latics in stalemate.

Following last week's 5-3 defeat in the goal fest against Preston North End, Latics improved their defence to hold out opponents Morecambe, with John Doolan's side unfortunate not to come away with all three points.

Matty Hamilton came closest for Latics when he forced the Shrimps' goalkeeper into a finger-tipped save with just moments remaining, but they had to settle for a point.

Impressive defensive partnerships were created during the game between; Lloyd Bannister, Sean Harrison, Adam Anson and Mayo Balogun, with the latter making his first official appearance as a scholar following a successful trial period.

Morecambe's goalkeeper remained the busier of the two, with Latics' 6 foot 5 inch goalkeeper making just one save during the match.

Hamilton and fellow forward Sam Cosgrove continued to prove an attacking threat for the team, but it just wasn't their day and it proved so in the final minute of the game when Hamilton shaped an excellent shot goal-bound, but saw it nudged around the foot of the post at the last second.

A pleasing afternoon overall for Under 18 coach Doolan who after the game said:

"We should have won the game really and we're a bit disappointed with that, but I can't take away how well we played defensively and after conceding eight in two games it shows how hard the lads have been working.

"I've been really impressed by Sam (Cosgrove) and Matty (Hamilton) this season up front, but it didn't quite work out for them today and Matty was very unlucky not to grab us the winner late on.

"Our concentration was outstanding and I'm very happy that this result gives us something to build on."
