After falling behind 4-0 at Chorley FC's Victory Park, Latics' youth team attempted late second half turn around against local rivals Preston North End, and despite a brace from Sam Cosgrove and a cool finish from Matthew Hamilton, Preston put the game just beyond a come back, scoring a fifth with 15 minutes remaining.

Early pressure from the hosts was almost eased when on 23 minutes double goal scorer Cosgrove raced through one-on-one with Preston goalkeeper Ross Dalton, but saw his low attempt saved by the keeper's feet.

Moments later Preston took the lead when a Josh Brownhill corner was turned in through a melee of boides in the penalty box, eventually rolling in off a Latics defender.

The first half ebbed and flowed, but there was little goal mouth action, all of which would come in the second half.

Five minutes into the second 45 Preston doubled their lead when substitute Lyle Magolis scored from the edge of the area with almost his first touch of the ball.

It was 3-0 on 53 minutes when Brownhill provided his second assist of the game for Brad Roscoe and a minute later Sean Holmes followed in a rebounded effort to push Preston 4-0 ahead.

The action continued and Latics were given hope of a comeback when Sam Cosgrove's effort from outside the area flew past Dalton for 4-1.

Cosgrove then turned provider with 18 minutes remaining when he crossed for fellow forward Matthew Hamilton who slotted with a cool finish.

With Latics' tails up and sensing a comeback, Preston nudged the game beyond John Doolan's side when Jack Ryan finished from a Nick Anderton cross to make it 5-2.

Not to be dismayed by the goal 15 minutes from time, Cosgrove grabbed his second of the match to pull it back to 5-3 with just moments of the game remaining.
