A penalty midway through the first half from Tim Chow and a rebound from Ryan Jennings after he saw a penalty saved in second half stoppage time proved enough to see off Bolton Wanderers in the Lancashire FA Senior Cup semi-final at Robin Park.
Latics booked their place in the final of the competition against Bury, but left it late to push the game away from their local rivals Bolton Wanderers who mustered up a late consolation in the third minute of injury time from Aaron Knight, despite ending the game with 10 men following Hayden White's dismissal.
After a disappointing an cruel end to Monday's Final Third Development League game against Morecambe, Latics didn't let their late 2-1 defeat get the better of them, but they would have been cursing their luck two minutes this afternoon when they once again hit the post.
Three times Latics were denied by the woodwork on Monday, with the influential Tim Chow being just one of the unlucky players and it was the midfielder once again who struck the upright with a volley in the early stages.
An action packed start saw Latics goalkeeper Marko Marosi called into action early on when he parried away Zach Clough's snap shot inside the area, but it was the hosts who would continue to go close.
Joey Johnson turned on the style three times before the opening goal of the game, with skilful dribbles down the right wing to fool Bolton's left back Ryan Sellers, but on each occasion he was denied a goal, hitting the side-netting from a deflection and lashing wide twice.
It was the perfect moment for Latics to take the lead after such pressure, and when Chow's quick feet drew a foul from Robert Holding, the referee had no choice but to point to the spot.
Chow brushed himself off and stepped up to the spot to convert a powerful penalty, advantage Latics.
On the whole the first half belonged to Latics and on 40 minutes they almost doubled their lead when Luke Ainscough was released straight down the middle, only to be stopped by Arran Lee-Barrett who made himself big to save, with Guillermo Andres' follow-up deflected wide.
The second half proved more difficult and Bolton came out with a bullish and direct approach.
A spell of last-ditch blocks were enough to see out any threat from the visitors, with Latics remaining a threat on the counter through Jennings and Johnson.
It became scrappy in midfield and cagey at the back for both sides in quick succession when Marosi had to be alert to stop Chow from inadvertently putting the ball into his own net, with Niall Maher almost doing the same thing for Bolton with a header wide of a beaten Lee-Barrett.
As the game came to close Latics turned up the heat and the lively Jennings was up to his usual tricks in frustrating Bolton full back White who had already been booked in the first half for a rash challenge.
With one minute remaining that old enemy the post stood in Latics' way once more when Ryan Meadows' long range effort cannoned back out, but two minutes into stoppage time his side were given the perfect chance to put the game beyond Bolton.
Jennings was on his way down the left wing, cutting inside the full back White and advancing into the area, but before he could get his cut back away, Jennings was tumbled for another Latics penalty and White saw red for a second bookable offence.
A calm run-up gave Lee-Barrett the determination to beat Jennings' penalty away, but he didn't get enough on the parry with the winger following up his miss for 2-0.
Latics were caught napping a minute later when Aaron Knight turned in the area to lash into the bottom left corner, but it was too little too late for the young Trotters as Peter Atherton's side booked their place in the LFA Senior Cup final against Bury.
