Latics players to join in with festivities as Wigan Council officially rename an area of the town centre in tribute of FA Cup win.Latics fans will be able to meet Emmerson Boyce and Ali Al Habsi in Wigan town centre this coming Thursday as Wigan Council officially rename an area as Believe Square - paying tribute to the sporting achievements of the town’s major sporting clubs in 2013, including Latics’ famous FA Cup win.
Believe Square, the area formerly referred to as the piazza located in front of Wigan Life Centre North, will be unveiled at an official opening ceremony, with two new signs erected to mark the occasion – one which features a timeline of the borough’s sporting achievements of 2013, and another officially naming the area.
The “Believe” slogan was first adopted by fans of Wigan Athletic and inspired the team to success in their Premier League survival fight in 2011/12. It took on a new meaning during the club’s historic FA Cup run the following season. When the team reached the final, Wigan Council worked with Latics on the “Believe in Wigan” campaign. It soon took on a life of its own.
The timeline tells the story of that special 12 months. Latics won the FA Cup and embarked on an exciting European adventure. Wigan Warriors claimed the Super League Grand Final and the Challenge Cup titles.
Emmerson Boyce and Ali Al Habsi will take part in the official unveiling around 2.00pm before joining supporters at the Wigan Athletic Community Trust stall. The stall will be set up at the square from 11am-4pm, with games and activities available for members of the public to take part in.
