Community Trust Fit Fans train with Trevor Painter ahead of the Wigan 10k.
A group of Latics supporters who have lost weight through a men’s health programme organised by the Club’s Community Trust scheme are gearing up for next week’s Wigan 10k. Yesterday they were put through their paces at a special training session with athletics coach Trevor Painter.
The scheme, Fit Fans, is a free 12 week programme for men over the age of 25 and aims to use sport and football to get more men in Wigan doing more physical activity and being healthier.
Trevor, husband and coach to Wigan athlete Jenny Meadows, led the session at Robin Park arena.
Trevor said: ‘It was great to see so many attending the training session and putting the effort in to try and get the best possible time they can achieve at next week’s Wigan 10K. I’ve tried to give them a few tips that will help them to focus on their pace around the run and hopefully not use up all their energy too quickly.’
Trevor works on the Trust’s Premier League 4 Sport project which aims to get more people in Wigan doing athletics.
Ian Ainscough, a Fit Fans participant, said: ‘I’ve tried to maintain the good work that Fit Fans instilled since completing the course; I play football once a week and I also have been going to the gym a lot more since completing the course. It’s really helped me to keep the weight off that I originally lost on the 12 week course.’
The Fit Fans were joined by staff and volunteers from Wigan Athletic who are running to raise money for the Trust.
Chris Baxter, the Community Trust’s Men’s Health Co-Ordinator, said: ‘It was great to have Trevor leading the session. He gave the guys some really useful tips and advice for next week’s race which will definitely help them around the run.’
