ROB KIERNAN PREVIEWS CHARLTON CLASH

15 August 2014

Defender Rob Kiernan gives his thoughts ahead of Latics’ trip to Charlton.

Speaking after visiting a Community Trust Soccer School at Abraham Guest on Thursday, defender Rob Kiernan gave us his thoughts ahead of Latics’ trip to the Valley for their first Sky Bet Championship away game of the season.

The 23-year-old said:

“You could look at the game as one we need to win, but it’s early days in the season and we’re still tweaking little things, so I don’t think anybody should get disheartened.

“We did really well to come back and get the point against Reading, some will say we got out of jail a bit, but we’ve got to use that goal and point as something to kick on from heading into the Charlton game.

“We’re confident going into the game and we’ve had a good few days building up to it, with some of the lads being given more chance to prepare with the team changing for the Burton game.”

Kiernan continued:

“The Valley is a tough place to go to and Charlton are coming off the back of a very good win in the Capital One Cup, but at this stage in the season any ground is hard to go to, we’ve just got to respond to our midweek result and focus on that.

“A victory against Charlton would really help us to build some momentum; to get a result away from home is always something that brings a boost to the group.”

Saturday’s game is Latics’ third in seven days, and with another fixture on the horizon away at Cardiff City on Tuesday, Kiernan said he is relishing the busy spell.

“It’s good to start the season with Saturday-Tuesday games because it keeps you on your toes.

“I’m enjoying myself in the team, it’s great to have been trusted with a start in the first game of the season and I’m looking forward to fighting hard to hold onto that place.

“My pre-season went really well and I feel well equipped to cement my place in the team.

“I’m excited about this season and we’ve all got a good feeling about where we are going to be, but for now we have to keep our focus on Charlton.”
