Callum McManaman and Rob Kiernan meet Abraham Guest Soccer School
Following the opening weekend of the 2014/15 Football League season, Wigan Athletic’s Callum McManaman was joined by teammate Rob Kiernan to make a visit to the Abraham Guest Academy, where Wigan Athletic Community Trust have been running this a Soccer School.
Callum and Rob arrived and met the 40 youngsters who have been attending the Soccer School throughout the past week, before joining in with a quick defending training session.
The pair then took part in a precision competition, going up against groups from the Soccer School to see who could put the most footballs through the targets in the Phoenix and Blue penalty goalposts.
Rob even tried to put off the youngsters by standing behind the targets!
His tactics seemed to work as Rob and Callum won the competition with a grand total of 17.
Rob said of the day: ‘It was nice to see the kids enjoying themselves and being so excited to just come and play football. It’s all about having fun.’
‘One of the Keepers had a brilliant little shot on him – I almost ended up taking one in the face when I was stood behind one of the targets! The standards of football were great!’
‘I was carrying Callum all afternoon when it got to our go though – he only got about two and I managed six with my left-foot! I might have to do a little job up front instead of him for the next few games… I’m only joking, we both managed to hit the target a few times.’
The weeklong course has proven popular again this summer, with 40 children attending each day.
Not only did the Soccer School attendees get to meet two of their Wigan Athletic heroes, but earlier in the week they also received a tour around the DW Stadium. They will also receive tickets to the next Latics home game against Blackpool on Saturday 23rd August.
A second Soccer School is running from Tuesday 26th – Friday 29th August, at a cost of £15 per day or just £50 for the full four days.
