Dominant display from Wigan Athletic Under 18s in 5-0 victory over Wrexham.

  • Latics dominate Wrexham in 5-0 win.
  • Robles grabs second double in as many games.
  • Third clean sheet in four games for Under 18s.

Cvetkovic 9
Robles 23, 25
Barrigan 62
Balogun 78

Latics’ Under 18s made light work of Wrexham at Robin Park Arena, not looking back after Alex Cvetkovic’s opening goal, with Louis Robles scoring his second brace in as many games, before James Barrigan and Mayowa Balogun completed the 5-0 rout in the second half.

The relentless attacking style of Peter Atherton’s young side was too much for the visitors from Wales to handle in a games which saw the midfield and attack flourish, coupled with another impressive defensive display to claim a third clean sheet of the season.

Owen Evans, recently called up to Wales’ Under 19s, had to be on hand in the first minute though, making a smart save one-on-one from a rare first half chance for Wrexham.

From then on though, the first 45 minutes belonged to Latics and the creativity from midfield to attack was a joy to watch.

James Barrigan was the first to test the Wrexham goalkeeper on just two minutes, when he followed his own cross into the area, firing low and hard for the keeper to save from Robles’ lay off.

It didn’t take long to find a way through though, and on nine minutes Cvetkovic made it 1-0 with a thumping left footed effort from just inside the area.

Excellent build up play down the right saw Barrigan feed Arnie Baxendale on the overlap, his low cross almost finding Robles in the middle, but as the ball was returned from the left side by Josh Gregory, Cvetkovic composed himself to smash in the first goal from 10 yards, too hard for the keeper to stop.

Chances continued to come, Barrigan stretching to turn a Robles cross just wide of the right just two minutes after the opening goal.

It was Robles himself who turned goal scorer though on 23 minutes when he turned quickly in the area to slot the ball low into the bottom left corner.

Two minutes later and Robles was at it again, scoring his fourth goal in two games, cutting inside from the left, dribbling between defenders and firing once again into the bottom left corner.

Impressive midfielder Adrian Purzycki almost made it 4-0 on 36 minutes when Barrigan held the ball up on the edge of the area, with Purzycki arriving to side foot narrowly wide of the left post.

Wrexham tried to push out at the start of the second half, but Latics soon ceased the initiative back and Robles was desperate to complete his hat trick, first having a free kick saved, before an excellent individual dribble down the left saw the referee rule the ball to have not crossed the line from the eventual shot as Wrexham scrambled to clear.

Just after the hour mark Latics added a fourth goal and a deserved one for striker Barrigan.

Baxendale came marauding down the right side once again, this time reaching the by-line to find Barrigan at the near post as he turned the ball across the keeper and into the bottom left corner.

Robles had another chance to complete his hat trick on 69 minutes when substitute Alaster Redmayne picked him out on the edge of the area, but the two-goal forward saw his left footed effort whistle just over the bar.

Another substitute making an impact was centre back Adam Anson who tested the Wrexham keeper with a well struck volley from the edge of the area, but it was fellow defender Balogun who would round off the game to make it 5-0.

Just a minute after Anson’s effort, Balogun latched onto the end of a Barrigan corner, lashing the ball into the roof of the net with real conviction.

Balogun came close to getting a second in the late stages when he turned inside the area to volley Barrigan’s cross just wide of the top corner.

Robles came close with the last chance of the game when Redmayne fed him inside the full back down the left, but the Wrexham defender recovered to block the eventual shot.

The victory for Latics was their second of the season, having opened their account on the first day against Rochdale.
