UWE ROSLER’S POST CARDIFF THOUGHTS

19 August 2014

Uwe Rosler says Latics must improve in the final third after dominant performance at Cardiff.

  • ‘We must get better in the final third.’
  • ‘Jones was always going to be a threat.’
  • ‘We’re improving our performances game-by-game.’

Speaking immediately after Latics’ 1-0 defeat away to Cardiff City in the Sky Bet Championship, Uwe Rosler gave his reflection of the game, stressing how important it is to improve in the final third.

Rosler said:

“I don’t think there will be many teams come here and dominate the game as we did tonight.

“We’re seeing a positive change in pattern; against Reading we started well and fell away in the second half, against Charlton we started well in the first half, and today we dominated for almost 90 minutes.

“Apart from that our only problem is getting the ball into the net.”

Rosler continued:

“Up front was the problem for us, but we win together and we lose together, nobody will be blamed.  I think my reflection of the game is a fair one.

“We caused Cardiff problems in transition and in the first half we got three against three in the final third, but the quality was not there.

“Tonight I saw a big improvement, but we have to get points on the board. We must not lose belief or confidence, because the players know they are getting better in their performances.”

The crucial goal of the game came from a set piece in the 53rd minute when Nicky Maynard turned in Kenwyne Jones’ goal ward header.  Rosler said only a mistake from Latics allowed Cardiff to score, adding:

“Cardiff couldn’t win the game without us making a mistake, and we limited them in that way, but lost the game from a set piece.

“With a player like Kenwyne Jones in their team that threat is always going to be there.  Other than that in open play I thought we were very good, apart from the final third.

“Our players are getting stronger, like Andrew Taylor who had only played two 90 minute games before he came to us and played very well tonight in a left wing back position; Ivan Ramis played his best game for us lasting 90 minutes and I felt that the midfield three were dominant and caused Cardiff massive problems.”
