Honduran international returns to the USA after two years at Latics.
Wigan Athletic can confirm that Honduras international Roger Espinoza has played his last game for the club, and will return to the USA.
The 28-year-old’s contract was due to expire in the summer but, having asked to return home to the United States earlier in the summer, the club has now reluctantly agreed to cancel his contract and allow him to leave.
Espinoza has played a part in all but one of Malky Mackay’s seven games in charge and the manager said of the Honduran:
“He’s a terrific kid and I’ve got an awful lot of time for him, he’s been heavily involved in my squads so far, but it’s more of a lifestyle thing and I respect that, he’s done well for this football club over a long period and it’s right to let him go back to America. We wish him all the best.”
Espinoza himself said: “I want to thank the club for letting this happen; I’ve enjoyed my two years here and will take away some amazing memories from Wigan. This is a fantastic club filled with great people and great supporters, who have always treated me brilliantly. for that I am really grateful.
“I know there is enough quality in this squad and a great new manager and the results will pick up in the weeks and months ahead.
“Goodbye and good luck.”
Espinoza made his Latics debut in the FA Cup with Budweiser at Bournemouth in 2013, a competition in which he has never known defeat. He was part of the team that won the competition by beating Manchester City in 2013, but missed out in last season’s semi-final penalty shootout defeat by Arsenal.
His league debut came against Sunderland and he scored his first goal for the club versus Swansea City in May 2013.
His 25-yard screamer versus MK Dons in the FA Cup third round in January 2014 was voted as the goal of the round and he scored another great goal in the Sky Bet Championship at home to Fulham this season, his last goal for the club.
He made 42 league appearances, scoring twice and 57 appearances in total, including three in the UEFA Europa league, scoring three goals.
