FOOTBALL REMEMBERS

4 December 2014

Latics to join Football League clubs in Football Remembers commemorations.

Football League clubs will join with members of the football family across the country this weekend to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War Christmas Truce.

Teams from the Premier League to the grassroots of the game will join together before their forthcoming fixtures for photos which will form a unique snapshot of the game in Britain and honour the memory of the events of December 2014.

The photographs taken as part of A Moment in History will be shared on social media with the hashtag #footballremembers and uploaded to a special Football Remembers website.

Speaking ahead of the Football Remembers commemorations, which run from December 5-14, HRH The Duke of Cambridge said:

"It promises to be a powerful way to engage and educate young people about such an important moment in our history.

"We all grew up with the story of soldiers from both sides putting down their arms on Christmas Day, and it remains wholly relevant today as a message of hope over adversity, even in the bleakest of times."

Matches in the Premier League, Sky Bet Football League and the second round of the FA Cup will be preceded by photographs of the participants, but it is hoped footballers at all levels will take part in the project and share their images on social media.

WIGAN BOROUGH REMEMBERS

In addition to the Football Remembers weekend, the club will be hosting it's own special match in partnership with Wigan Council on Saturday 20 December when Rotherham United visit the DW Stadium.

The days events will include a number of vintage stalls positioned around the stadium, selling food and drink.

The Scots Guard Associated Pipes and Drums will lead the pre-match commemoration along with local school children and Sarah Dennis (The Veterans Sweetheart) who will be raising funds for the Royal British Legion.

Various vintage military vehicles will be on display and in attendance will be the Veterans Association, Combined Artillery and TA Band, the Territorial Army, Army, Navy and RAF cadets and many more.

Further information regarding this game will be revealed on the website in due course.  This is a free event located outside of the DW Stadium on matchday.  To buy tickets for the game [click here] and make a day of the event.
