Match Preview

Latics head to South Wales for their fifth round tie of the FA Cup with Budweiser this Saturday looking to secure a place in the draw for the last eight of the competition. Standing in their way are Premier League opponents Cardiff City who currently occupy 19th place in the league table.

The hosts have good home form in the FA Cup having only lost one of their last eight home games in the competition. On the other hand, Latics are undefeated in the competition in over two years – not losing since the 2-1 defeat at Swindon Town in the third round back in January 2012.

In their last six FA Cup matches against Premier League opposition, Latics have conceded just three goals.

Latics arrive at the fifth round after defeating MK Dons in the third round and Premier League opponents Crystal Palace in the fourth round. Meanwhile Cardiff’s route included a 2-1 third round win at Newcastle and a 1-0 fourth round victory over Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.

Team News

Uwe Rosler insists he will name a competitive side to face Cardiff City and says that “the Club is proud to be the holders of the famous trophy.” He has however alluded to a number of changes from the side that defeated Sheffield Wednesday in midweek including possibly an appearance for young ‘keeper Lee Nicholls who did so well in the absence of Scott Carson and Ali Al Habsi earlier in the season.

It is likely that Latics will continue with top scorer Nick Powell although the manager has not indicated how long the Manchester United loanee will be missing and James McArthur has a virus and wont travel with the team.

Ivan Ramis played for the reserves against Port Vale on Tuesday afternoon as the Spaniard looks to fight his way back into the manager’s plans. Gary Caldwell and Shaun Maloney remain the only long term injured.

Nicky Maynard cannot play in the game as per the terms of his loan arrangement.

For Cardiff City Kenwyne Jones and Fabio are cup tied but the Club are awaiting permission from Manchester Utd to use Wildred Zaha in the competition who has previously only been an unused substitute in the FA Cup this season.  Craig Bellamy is suspended after being retrospectively punished for a clash with Swansea's Jonathan De Guzman in last weekend's South Wale derby.

Head to Head

Latics certainly have the edge in terms of the head to head. Wigan Athletic are undefeated against the Bluebirds in the last 10 meetings having won five of those, drawing the other five. The two side have only ever met in league matches with the overall record showing nine wins for Latics, four for Cardiff with nine games ending in a draw.
