Sweden international defender confirmed as fifth January signing for Uwe Rosler
Wigan Athletic are delighted to confirm that Sweden international defender Markus Holgersson has signed for the club until the end of the season, subject to international clearance.
The 28-year-old joins the club as a free agent and becomes Uwe Rosler’s fifth January signing.
The Latics manager is happy to welcome his latest arrival, saying:
“Markus had a few options available to him and we are delighted he has chosen to come to Wigan Athletic,” he said. “He brings a wealth of experience together with the versatility to play in a number of positions because of his good technical ability.
“The defence is an area where we needed strengthening and Markus will definitely help the squad moving forwards.”
Holgersson joins the club after two seasons with MLS side New York Red Bulls, where he captained the side and was a regular in defence, making 67 appearances and scoring three goals.
Last season he helped his team win the Supporters’ Shield after finishing top of the overall league before entering the play offs, where they were defeated by Houston Dynamo.
Holgersson began his career at Hoganas BK in Sweden back in 2004, moving on to play for Angelholms FF a year later, where he made almost 100 appearances in three years.
In 2008, Swedish giants Helsingborgs IF signed the versatile defender, and he helped the club become the first in Swedish football history to win the treble, claiming the league title, Swedish Cup (which he won twice) and the Super Cup.
In January 2012, Red Bulls coach Hans Backe brought Holgersson to the MLS, and shortly after made his international debut, playing the full 90 minutes in a 5-0 win over Qatar.
Holgersson will wear the number 2 jersey for Latics.
