Roger Espinoza on hand to help with coaching session and to present shirts

Coaches from Wigan Athletic Community Trust were joined by Latics first team star Roger Espinoza recently to help a Wigan primary school prepare for the next round of a national football competition.

In January St Thomas Primary School from Ashton won the Wigan round of the 2014 Football League Kids Cup and will now go on to represent the Football Club in North West heat of Under 11’s competition.

The pupils took part in passing and shooting drills with Roger at the special training session at the Wigan Youth Zone, with the player also presenting the school with their own Wigan Athletic football strip which they will get to keep after the competition.

Roger said: "It was great to see the Youth Zone first hand because it's something I've heard a lot about.

"The session was really good and the standard of the players from St Thomas' shows the sort of talent coming through in the Wigan community.

"It's always great to get involved and the work that the Wigan Athletic Community Trust do is something to be very proud of."

All 72 Clubs in the Football League take part in the annual competition, and those schools lucky enough to make it through to the national finals will get to play on the Wembley turf before the Play Off finals in May.

As part of its new Team Latics Schools Sports programme, Wigan Athletic Community Trust is offering primary schools in Wigan 25 hours of free high quality football and sports coaching.
