A last minute equaliser denied Joe Parkinson’s Development Squad from a hard-earned victory on Saturday at Blackburn Rovers’ training ground, after Latics deservedly went ahead on 70 minutes thanks to substitute James Barrigan.
Another hot summer’s day in the North West proved a test for both sides in a physical battle, resulting in a typical pre-season work out and a step towards the desired fitness levels for the squad.
It was an even first half, but counter attacks in the second half would prove crucial for Latics, with Under 18 striker Barrigan’s goal on 70 minutes coming from such a move.
Receiving the ball centrally on the edge of the area the 16-year-old striker worked the ball into a shooting opportunity, and with the help of a deflection to wrong foot the keeper, he tucked the ball in.
With something to chase, Blackburn upped their game in the closing stages to put pressure on Latics’ defence, finally overcoming their resolve with an equaliser just before the final whistle as the striker slotted the ball into the bottom left corner from the edge of box.
After the game Joe Parkinson said he was particularly pleased with his side’s response from their previous game at Birmingham City.
“I think had we won it would have been deserved, but the big positive is the way we have responded to our defeat against Birmingham.
“Blackburn challenged us today and the pace of the game in the heat was very high, which is why I’ve got to give particular praise and credit to the lads.
“We were much stronger defensively and we held possession impressively for large spells, with some excellent combination play from front to back.”
