CHARNOCK RICHARD 2
WIGAN ATHLETIC 2
Robles 13, 18
Under 18s striker Louis Robles grabbed two early goals in the Development Squad's second pre-season friendly of the summer, only for hosts Charnock Richard to grab a late draw, with David Burrows on the scoresheet, before Ryan Donnellan scored an equaliser with one of the final actionsof the game.
The fixture was described as a 'good run out for fitness' by Development Squad coach Joe Parkinson, who praised his side's efforts against a physical Charnock Richard first team.
Watched on by a number of local supporters at Charnock's Mossie Park, Latics made an excellent start to the game, and inside 20 minutes they had already established a two goal lead.
Robles showed his goal scoring instinct for both of his two goals, scoring the first on 13 minutes when he latched onto the end of a deflected shot across the area, slotting in from six yards.
The 17-year-old's movement in the area was too difficult for the hosts to handle and five minutes later he doubled his account, darting across the box to divert a cross from the right side at the near post.
Full backs Luke Burke and Liam Lambert garnered particular praise for their energy throughout the afternoon, with Jordan Flores a notable threat going forwards.
With half time approaching Charnock gave themselves a lifeline when David Burrows lurked from a set piece, turning the ball in from close range after a header back into the danger zone.
Latics had a perfect chance to extend their lead back to two goals midway through the second half, only for Joey Johnson to be denied from the penalty spot.
With just seconds remaining of the game the hosts grabbed themselves a dramatic equaliser from another set piece, when Ryan Donnellan hammered home after a melee in the six yard box.
After the game Parkinson shared his thoughts, admitting a bit of experience would have helped his side see out the win:
"It was a good test for us, a physical one and one that the lads will benefit a lot from.
"We needed a bit of experience to see the game out, and we should have defended better from set pieces, but overall I'm pleased with the performance.
"Louis' (Robles) goals are very encouraging for him, he played down the middle having played out wide last season and he looked very sharp."
