Pitch concerns at Leigh Sports Village force cancellation of pre-season friendly.

Wigan Athletic has announced that the proposed pre-season friendly match versus Walsall to be played this Friday 11 July has been cancelled following a pitch inspection at Leigh Sports Village.

The match will now take place behind closed doors at Christopher Park Training Ground.

A decision regarding the second scheduled friendly match against Besiktas due to be played next Tuesday 15 July, will be made later this week.

Jonathan Jackson, Wigan Athletic Chief Executive, said:

“Leigh Sports Village expected that the pitch would have recovered from the Elton John concert last month, but unfortunately, the impact that the concert has had on a section of the pitch has meant that the normally immaculate surface has not recovered sufficiently and reluctantly we have now had to make this decision. .”

The club apologises to supporters hoping to watch the team play on Friday.

Fans who have purchased tickets for the game can seek a refund by contacting the DW Stadium Ticket Office in person or by telephone for credit card purchases on 0871 66 33 552*
