Kicks youngsters win North West Football Competition.
As part of the Premier League Kicks project the youngsters took part in the tournament at Manchester City’s Etihad Campus on Sunday – beating the hosts 1-0 in the final.
Ryan Hughes who played for the team said:
“The standard was a lot better than I thought it was going to be and I never thought I would get chance to play against teams from other clubs.
“It was a great tournament and it shows if we go to the football sessions at Kicks and are well behaved we get invited to events like this.”
The Premier League Kicks project provides free football and sports activities for young people between the ages of 12 – 19 at weekends and evenings throughout the year.
Through the Community Trust, Latics run sessions in five different areas of Wigan working with hundreds of young people a week.
Tom Drake who manages the Wigan Athletic Kicks programme said: “Considering the lads had only played together a couple of times before Sunday they did so well to win the tournament.
“Getting to play matches and competitions against other clubs, in different cities and towns is a great experience for the lads and is just one of example of the opportunities they get from taking part in Kicks with us.”
