29 teams take part in special football competition at Wigan Youth Zone's birthday party.

Over 2,000 people took part in birthday celebrations for Wigan Youth Zone last weekend as the centre held a day of carnival activities to thank all of its supporters.

And as part of the party, Wigan Athletic Community Trust organised a special football tournament for 29 different teams from across the Borough.

Since it opened last June over 5,000 young people have taken part in football coaching at the facility with Community Trust staff running sessions every day of the week.

The four outdoor football pitches at Wigan Youth Zone were funded with the support of the Premier League who awarded the Community Trust a grant of £350,000 in 2012 to build them.

Football Officer, Ian Gaskell who is responsible for running all the football activities at Wigan Youth Zone said:

“The whole day was fantastic with people coming into the centre from 10am in the morning to 10pm in the night.

“The fact that we had 29 teams’ different teams from across the Borough shows what a different to the community these football pitches are having.”

The winning teams were: Under 12’s Wigan Junior Latics; Under 14’s Ashton Athletic; Under 16’s Shakerley Kicks project.

With support from the Premier League and the PFA, Wigan Athletic Community Trust runs a range of football coaching for youngsters at the centre including evening football activities for 8 – 21 year olds twice a week, monthly football competitions and football camps during school holidays.
