A personal message to everyone at the club from Jordi Gomez.

Latics’ out of contract Player of the Season Jordi Gomez contacted the club after sealing a move to Sunderland last night to express his thanks to Wigan Athletic for five great seasons with us – and to say what a difficult decision it was to leave.

He said: “My time in Wigan was unforgettable, I made so many good friends at the club and I’d like to say a big thank you to all the staff for the way they have helped me and treated me in my time.

"The manager and football staff of course who help you improve every day but also all the people at the training ground, the medical staff, the analysis team, the media staff, player liaison, the secretaries, the people at the stadium on match day – everyone behind the scenes who never get mentioned but make everything possible.

“I have some amazing memories to take away, playing in some great matches in the Premier League, the FA Cup was an experience we will all keep for life, and to get the supporters Player of the Year this season was very special, so a big thanks to all the fans who supported me, it meant so much.

“The club did everything it could to make me stay but I think that I needed a new challenge and to have the chance of playing back in the Premier League was a great opportunity for me.

"I have had so many messages over the past weeks and I just felt it was right to take the time to explain my decision. I hope everyone understands and accepts my choice.

“Wigan Athletic will always hold a big place in my heart, a real special club – so thanks once again and good luck next season. Uwe is a really good manager, he got the dressing room buzzing again and I know he will keep the team progressing. It will be the first result I look for every week.”
