Jordi Gomez scoops the big one at Player of The Year Awards.
Latics’ midfield magician Jordi Gomez was the overwhelming winner as Wigan Athletic Supporters Player of Year, announced at the DW Stadium tonight.
The 28 year old has scored his best ever Latics goal haul of 11 this season, but has also been an instrumental member of the midfield this season, making 45 appearances so far – and he is sure to be a key figure in the Play-Offs.
Where do you start when it comes to choosing a favourite or most important Gomez moment this season? The last minute penalty against Sheffield Wednesday? His stunning late winner against Charlton Athletic?
The bullet of a shot that began the rout of Reading? His outrageous 35 yard effort at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest? And that’s before you mention his penalties at Manchester City and Wembley in the FA Cup that sent the Latics fans into dreamland…
Gomez was the runaway winner and says to be recognised by the supporters is a huge honour.
“It is fantastic for me personally”, he said, “and I would like to thank the Latics supporters for voting for me and supporting me this season – it means a lot. This season has been a big adventure for us and of course it’s far from over. It has been a big team effort.
"When you have so many matches to play, everyone plays their part, so I think it’s only right for me to dedicate this award to all my team mates.”
James McArthur and Emmerson Boyce were runners up of the public vote, made available to fans via the official website.
