Matthew Hamilton named as Scholar of the Year.
Matty Hamilton has won the Michael Millett Award for Youth Team Player of The Year, announced at the Wigan Athletic Player of The Season Dinner tonight at the DW Stadium.
The 18 year old Second Year Scholar followed in the footsteps of Leighton Baines and Callum McManaman in joining the club from Everton and after a steady first year, he has come on leaps and bounds this season, according to interim coach Joe Parkinson.
“Matty has progressed really well and has become a real team player, scoring goals but also being heavily involved in many of the team’s goals,” said Parkinson, who himself came through the system at Wigan Athletic before an illustrious career which included an FA Cup winners’ medal with Everton.
After making his debut in November, Hamilton also played eight times at Development Squad level this season, which is an indication of how highly he is regarded.
Hamilton said: “When I was told about the award, it gave me a massive lift and I hope I can kick on now and keep progressing my game.
“I’d like to thank my parents for all the support they gave me and also to the coaches at the club for helping me every day.”
The Award is named in memory of Michael Millett, the former Latics midfielder who was tragically killed in a road accident in 1995, aged just 18.
