Roger Espinoza ‘embraces the spirit of the club’ and receives Community award.
World Cup-bound Roger Espinoza has picked up the ‘Community Player of The Year’ award, announced at the Wigan Athletic Player of The Season Dinner tonight at the DW Stadium.
The Honduras international is a big crowd favourite among Latics fans, and as well as his all action performances on the pitch, much of his popularity also stems from his attitude off the pitch.
The club prides itself on how close it remains to the local community and – mainly through the work of the Wigan Athletic Community Trust – is heavily involved into putting into place some excellent schemes in an around the Borough, involving thousands of children and young people per year.
Latics players are out as often as their busy schedule enables them to be to promote these events, with at least one appearance taking place most weeks, the squad taking it in turns to help support the Community Trust.
Latics’ Head of Community Tom Flower said: “The support we receive from the first team players is exceptional and they always join in and take part, from coaching sessions with the young people to trying their hand at activities like basketball, table tennis or tennis and the joy they bring to people in and around the town is of real lasting value.
“It is difficult to single anyone out because the players have all been excellent this year, but Roger did stand out during his appearances, offering to stay longer and chat to people and really embracing the spirit of the club in everything he does. He is a great ambassador for Wigan Athletic and we are privileged to have him working with us.”
