WIGAN ATHLETIC 4
Delort 20, 35
A strong Wigan Athletic side comfortably saw off Morecambe at Christopher Park in the Final Third Development League, with double delight for Andy Delort in the first half accompanied by a near post finish from Rob Kiernan and a second half tap in from Jordan Flores.
Latics created a number of chances throughout the 90 minutes in a dominant performance, hitting the woodwork several times as they recorded back-to-back victories.
Seven first team players featured from the start, with Delort partnered up front by Oriol Riera, Kiernan joined in defence by James Tavernier and Thomas Rogne, whilst Ben Watson continued his recovery process in midfield alongside Emyr Huws.
After half chances for Riera and Delort, Latics opened their account on 20 minutes with a fine move and finish.
Watson found Tavernier racing down the right wing, with the full back provided the perfect cross to Delort who powered his header home. A simple goal, but highly effective.
Confidence was flowing for Tavernier who began to deliver time and time again from the right, Huws, Riera and Flores all coming close to doubling the lead.
On 35 minutes Delort claimed his second of the afternoon with aplomb, remaining the only calm head to lift the ball over the goalkeeper from the edge of the area after a melee of Morecambe defenders failed to clear.
Four minutes later and Latics extended their lead to 3-0 when Flores' corner provided the assist for Kiernan who stole in at the near post to fire home left footed.
Just before the break Kiernan tried the same manoeuvre with Flores, narrowly missing out on his second of the game.
Within the opening 10 or so minutes of the second half Latics hit the post twice and managed to extend their lead to 4-0, a forceful start to a dominant second 45.
Delort's improvisation in a tight squeeze on the right side of the area saw him hit the outside of the right post when he swept the ball around the goalkeeper, with Kiernan hitting the woodwork from another corner involving Flores.
On 57 minutes Flores had a goal of his own, poaching at the back post following in on a rebound off the woodwork from Riera's connection to Delort's cross from the right.
Latics continued to create chances and flow forwards in numbers, testing the Morecambe keeper on several occasions, the closest of which fell to Delort with 15 minutes remaining when he smashed a free kick low to the bottom right corner, only for the keeper to tip it away with his left hand.
The free kick came from a foul on the French striker, a close call which on other occasions may have been given as a penalty such was the proximity to the edge of the box.
The 23-year-old and strike partner Riera were replaced on 77 minutes by Republic of Ireland Under 21 international Matthew Hamilton and Development Squad captain Tim Chow. Declan Poole was also introduced on 87 minutes for Ben Watson.
Latics' final action of the game came in the form of another solid chance when left back Mayowa Balogun fizzed a half volley goal bound, but saw it beaten away.
