Two goals from Louis Robles, an own goal and a second half free kick from Liam Lambert extended Latics' winning run to nine games in the Football League Youth Alliance with a 4-1 victory against Port Vale at Robin Park Arena.

Robles' double before half time put him level with Sam Cosgrove on 14 goals for the campaign. A Latics own goal added controversy towards the end of the first half as to whether it had crossed the line, and with Port Vale going down to 10 men in the second half the controversy continued.

All in all a solid performance from Peter Atherton's side, holding onto their place at the top of the division.

It took just 16 minutes for Latics to take the lead after a solid opening to the game, with a spark of brilliance as Josh Gregory threaded a perfectly weighted pass down the right channel for Louis Robles who took it first time to slot underneath the goalkeeper for his 13th goal of the campaign.

Six minutes later and Latics extended their lead when makeshift centre forward Adam Anson (usually a centre half) played the pass of the half when he found Liam Lambert wide on the left with a cross field ball.

Lambert dodged a defender to cross low into the box and the pressure from Robles inside the box forced an own goal after a poor attempted clearance at the front post was sliced in.

Three minutes later and Anson almost had a goal of his own, when Mayowa Balogun's lofted pass down the left found Robles wide left, his cross finding the well timed run of Anson in the area, but a last ditch block denied Latics a third goal.

On 32 minutes Robles grabbed his second of the game to extend the lead further.  Quick thinking from Luke Burke's throw in down the right found Robles in the area, he let the ball run across his body to step goal side of the defender before being bundled to the ground for a penalty.

Robles dusted himself down and fired into the right corner for 3-0 and his 14th goal of the campaign.

The first half wasn't without controversy though, allowing Port Vale a route back into the game when a cross from the right was judged to have been caught over the line by Latics goalkeeper Owen Evans.  The linesman's call on the far side sparked confusion, but the goal stood and Latics went into half time 3-1 up.

It became a close second half, with both sides fighting to take the upper hand in terms of possession, but it seemed only a matter of time before Latics would score again.

On 74 minutes that became the case, but only after a controversial red card saw Port Vale go down to ten men.  A last ditch challenge on Robles by the Valiants' number six looked to have been clean, but after the touch on the ball, he tripped the striker and the referee pointed for a free kick before brandishing the red card.

A well worked free kick routine saw two players fake efforts, before Lambert smashed it left footed through bodies to round off the scoreline.
