Five Latics in international action with McClean and Maloney both winning.
James McClean helped the Republic of Ireland ease to a 7-0 win over lowly Gibraltar in Dublin as Martin O’Neill’s side maintained their 100% start to their Euro 2016 qualification campaign.
Latics winger McClean bagged twice after Robbie Keane bagged a hat-trick in the first 18 minutes at the Aviva Stadium before Jordan Perez put through his own goal and Wes Hoolahan rounded off a fine evening’s work.
The win sets McClean and the Irish up nicely for Tuesday’s more ominous trip to Germany as O’Neill’s side look to take an early lead in Group D.
And they’ll take confidence from Germany’s defeat to Poland over the weekend which leaves the group wide open.
Also in Group D, Shaun Maloney’s strike forced an own goal from Akaki Khubutia as Gordon Strachan’s Scotland defeated Georgia 1-0 at Ibrox.
The win means the Scots head into Tuesday’s trip to Poland with the chance of going level on points with the current leaders.
Meanwhile, William Kvist captained Denmark on his 53rd cap as the Danes retained top spot in Group I of qualification with a 1-1 draw against Albania.
Ermir Lenjani opened the scoring for the Albanians before Lasse Vibe equalised for the visitors in Elbasan.
On Friday, Ali Al Habsi’s Oman continued their preparations for the Gulf Cup as the Asian outfit were defeated 4-3 by Costa Rica in Muscat.
Goals from Alvaro Saborio, John Ruiz, Juan Bustos and David Ramirez helped the Central American outfit into a 4-1 lead after Raed Ibrahim Saleh had earlier equalised for the hosts.
Mohammed Al Seyabi and Emad Al Hosani set up a tense finish, though Oman go into Monday’s clash with Uruguay on the back of back-to-back defeats.
Elsewhere, Emyr Huws missed Wales’ 0-0 draw with Bosnia & Herzegovina in Cardiff as Chris Coleman’s side went top of Group B qualifying.
