For the second weekend running Peter Atherton’s Under 18s impressed in front of goal to score four times, beating Bury 4-1 at Robin Park Arena in a powerful attacking display.

Goals from James Barrigan and Alex Cvetkovic had Latics 2-0 up at the break, before last season’s 22-goal striker Sam Cosgrove grabbed a brace of headers, taking him to six goals in the last four matches.

Bury pulled back a late consolation, but Latics dominated throughout, creating a number of other chances and providing creative spark all over the pitch.

This season’s top goal scorer Louis Robles set the tone for the game just five minutes in, when Cvetkovic’s clever pass in behind the defence allowed for the striker to shoot first time, only for the Bury goalkeeper to tip it away from the bottom right corner.

Moments later Cosgrove struck from 25 yards, again testing the ‘keeper, with a goal looking more and more likely.

At the other end Owen Evans was kept on his toes early on, when a deflected effort almost dropped in over his head, only for the Wales Under 19 international to acrobatically leap backwards and tip the ball over the bar.

Barrigan, Robles and Cvetkovic all continued to test the Bury ‘keeper, and on 30 minutes they proved too much for him, breaking the deadlock with a fine move and finish.

Robles latched onto a ball clipped over the top down the left side, allowing for Barrigan to ghost into the area, open up his body and slot the ball into the bottom right corner.

Latics were 2-0 up by half time with another well worked goal crowned with an impressive finish.

Cosgrove dropped deep from attack to holds the ball up in his own half, releasing it right to Robles who in turn spotted Cvetkovic on the overlap, with the midfielder cutting inside and whipping a low, left footed effort into the bottom right corner.

Eight minutes into the second half Cosgrove got in on the act himself, heading into the top right corner from Barrigan’s looping left footed cross.

Adrian Purzycki worked hard to create the opening, keeping the ball in play and outmuscling a Bury defender on the left by-line before the pull back for Barrigan.

Nine minutes later and Latics had a fourth, Cosgrove once again the scorer with his head and Barrigan providing his second assist of the game with an inch perfect corner.

Bury pulled one back on 69 minutes when their substitute drifted in at the back post to head home a high free kick, but Latics continued to impress and on 80 minutes Alaster Redmayne almost scored with his first involvement.

The tricky winger beat Bury’s right back on the counter, before cutting inside and forcing the ‘keeper to push the ball away from the bottom right corner.

Bury’s stopper was in action again moments later, with Cosgrove coming within inches of his hat trick goal, again the ball was tipped away.

Cvetkovic was then denied a second when his effort was cleared off the line after squeezing a shot under the ‘keeper, with Latics settling for four goals against the second placed team in the Football League Youth Alliance.
