Latics stretched their unbeaten run to four games in emphatic style at home to Morecambe, as Sam Cosgrove netted a brace, with James Barrigan and Alex Cvetkovic also on target in the comprehensive 4-0 victory.
Top goal scorer in 2013/14, Cosgrove caused the Morecambe defence problems all game, scoring just before half time to give Latics the initiative for the second half.
Barrigan’s cool finish made it 2-0, he then set up Cvetkovic for the third before Cosgrove earned and scored a penalty to round of the result.
Peter Atherton’s side went into the match buoyant from their recent form, which last week saw progression in the Youth Alliance Cup, following on from a solid draw away to Burnley and a 2-1 win away at Carlisle United.
Atherton was also happy to give game time to players such as Alex Lingard, Dieu Foukamene and Matthew Rimmer.
Latics produced a good performance over the 90 minutes, but could have gone into the break further than 1-0 ahead.
The opening goal was typical of Cosgrove’s instincts, using his power to head in at the back post.
Barrigan doubled the scoring just eight minutes into the second half with a composed, one-on-one finish, before turning provider for the games third goal 10 minutes from time.
Operating wide down the right, Barrigan whipped the ball across the box to find Cvetkovic on the opposite side as the midfielder scored his second of the campaign.
Three minutes from time Cosgrove grabbed his second, converting from the penalty spot after being taken out just inside the area.
It was the second time the striker had been fouled in a similar fashion, with calls waved away for the first incident. No matter though, as he stepped up confidently to make it 4-0 for his third goal of the season.
After the game Under 18 coach Peter Atherton expressed his delight at the work on the training ground being replicated on the pitch.
“We won 4-0 which is always a good indicator of how hard we’re working, but I was really impressed with our third goal.
“We’ve worked on our wide play and on how we can utilise opposite flanks when crossing into the box, so to see it come off like it did was great.”
“Another pleasing aspect of the game was being able to give players who haven’t played as much this season some game time.
“We’ve got a very competitive squad and results like this make it even more so.”
