UWE ROSLER: DOMINANCE INTO GOALS

21 October 2014

Uwe Rosler’s Millwall programme notes - Quality and desire will shine through.

A preview of Latics manager Uwe Rosler’s personal thoughts ahead of Tuesday night’s Sky Bet Championship match at the DW Stadium against Millwall.

TONIGHT IS ABOUT MAINTAINING THE DESIRE AND QUALITY WE HAVE SHOWN, IN SPELLS, ALL SEASON FOR 90 MINUTES - AND TURNING THAT DOMINANCE INTO GOALS.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP PLACES BIG DEMANDS ON EVERYONE

These periods are something unique to the Football League, especially the Championship, in having to fit in the games missed during the international break. But it’s a challenge all of us understand - staff and players - and have to find solutions for.

WE WENT FOR AN ATTACKING POLICY AGAINST BRENTFORD

I knew there would be chances at both ends against Brentford – and so it proved.

That’s why we went for a bold selection, with a team full of attack-minded players who are all potential match-winners on their day and, in that respect, it was a very positive team selection, aimed at winning the match. But, unfortunately for us, we just couldn’t find the vital touch in front of goal.

We were disappointed with our first-half performance – we cannot hide from that. In the second half, there was a collective belief among the players to keep going and get the breakthrough and we were the dominant team no question – once more, just one good finish away from getting our rewards.

WE NEED TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE

Against Millwall it will be about maintaining the desire and quality we showed in the second-half against Brentford, in the last 20 minutes against Ipswich Town, in so many periods against Nottingham Forest and Wolves; and turning that dominance into goals.

We have the players in our squad to hurt teams – we all know that. But in the Championship, every point has to be earned.

WELCOME TO MILLWALL

This will be a different kind of match from Brentford on Saturday, but in England you have to adapt on a game-by-game basis because there is such tactical variety from team-to-team – that is one of the reasons why we like it so much.

TONIGHT WE NEED THE FANS AGAIN

I will never tire of telling you what an important role you the supporters have to play and to thank you on behalf of everyone at the club for your fantastic support game after game.

When we started building a head of steam in the second half against Brentford, the energy from the stands helped to drive on the players, which then in turn drove on the supporters.

This is the symbiosis we need for 90 minutes: energy from the players, energy from the stands, starting from the first minute.

We are all in it together so let’s all play our part again for the good of Wigan Athletic.

Enjoy the game

Uwe
