Wigan Athletic Community Trust youngsters to represent England after winning Coalfields Regeneration Trust's Game On tournament in Derby.

Last weekend, two teams of youngsters who take part in the Community Trust’s Midnight Leagues at Shakerley, sealed the top two spaces in a national tournament and will now go on to represent England in the Game On Home International tournament.

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust’s Game On Inter-Regional tournament saw teams from Doncaster and Hartlepool travel to Derby to compete.

The Wigan Athletic top team finished the competition unbeaten to confirm their space in the home internationals, which takes place in Scotland next month.

The winning team were then presented with their trophy in front of the crowds at Derby County’s iPro Stadium in the lead up to kick off in their game against Millwall, which the Wigan Athletic coaches and teams were also invited to watch.

Tom Drake, Community Cohesion co-ordinator for the Community Trust, said: ‘It was a great event to attend and the two teams representing Wigan Athletic did brilliantly to win the overall competition. We’d like to extend our thanks and congratulations to Derby County Community Trust and Coalfields Regeneration Trust for hosting the tournament.’

‘The boys are now really looking forward to going on and representing England in the Home International’s next month.’

The Midnight League Football sessions at Shakerley Common take place on Thursday evenings from 6-8pm and are free for all 12-19 year olds. The sessions are ran in partnership with Coalfields Regeneration Trust and Wigan and Leigh Housing.
