Wigan Athletic chairman and manager help to launch new North West Kicks league

Wigan Athletic manager Uwe Rosler and Chairman Dave Whelan were on hand last night to launch a brand new football league for 12-19 year olds who take part in Kicks projects around the North West.

As well as a Wigan Athletic Kicks team, football clubs Bolton Wanderers, Blackpool, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Stoke City all sent members representing their Community Trust’s Kicks projects.

It was a close final between the teams from Wigan Athletic and Manchester United, but it finished 5-4 to our home team who were presented with the tournament winner’s trophy by the Community Development Executive for the Premier League, Nick Perchard.

Not only did the Kicks participants take part in the tournament, they also got the chance to meet Uwe Rosler and Dave Whelan, who officially opened the tournament and watched the opening games.

Uwe Rosler said: ‘It is great to see tournaments and leagues like this up and running, not only in Wigan but also across the North West and the rest of the country. It is important that as a club we provide as many opportunities as possible for young people to play and get involved with football.’

Nick Perchard said: ‘Premier League Kicks aims to instil a lifelong love of sport in young people whilst also developing life skills. Using the engagement power of Premier League and Football League clubs the programme has engaged 40,000 young people in just one year.’

‘Wigan Athletic have had an excellent first year delivering the project and they, together with the other clubs in the region, are working extremely hard to provide young people with a wide range of exciting opportunities. The Premier League is very grateful to the club for hosting this inaugural event.’

The teams will play against each other on a monthly basis, with a final competition arranged for May for the clubs taking part.

As part of the Latics Kicks project, which is supported by the Premier League and Sport England, the Community Trust runs football and sports sessions for hundreds of 12-19 year olds each week at several locations across Wigan and Leigh.
