The Development Squad breezed through to the next round of the Under 21 Premier League Cup with a 5-0 victory at Robin Park Arena against local rivals Preston North End.
Aaron Taylor-Sinclair scored two excellent free kicks in the first half, with Marc-Antoine Fortune making it 3-0 from the penalty spot before the break.
Latics continued to impress in the second half, with Tim Chow making it 4-0 from close range, before Ryan Jennings’s 30-yard strike flew in from all of 30 yards, the perfect way to round off the big win.
Penalty scorer Fortune was joined in the starting XI by fellow first team squad member Roger Espinoza, giving the youthful Development Squad strong guidance throughout.
After an early scare in the first minute which called Lee Nicholls into action, Latics soon got into their groove.
On seven minutes the relentless Jennings was tripped on the edge of the area, allowing for Taylor-Sinclair to take aim and curl the opening goal over the Preston goalkeeper and into the left corner for 1-0.
The pressure continued and Jennings was at the heart of it, linking up with Fortune to win another free kick in shooting distance, and Taylor-Sinclair made the rest look simple.
His left footed curling shot found the top right corner for 2-0 and Latics were well on their way.
Latics were working hard to get a goal from open play, with quick passing in midfield between Fraser Fyvie, Espinoza and Chow, but the third goal was once again from a dead ball, this time Fortune converting from the penalty spot, after Jennings was tumbled in the box.
At 3-0 going into the break, Latics’ second half performance was comfortable and commanding, giving Preston little room to breathe.
Skipper Chow made it 4-0 just after the hour mark from close range after Espinoza caused disruption in the six yard box, but it was the heavily involved Jennings who took the plaudits with his late 30-yard goal.
Space opened up for Jennings, Preston looked reluctant to close him down and the young forward took his opportunity with open arms, letting fly from distance to hammer the ball home for 5-0.
