Under 18s ‘keeper Kelland Absalom features in international double header for Wales.

Kelland Absalom became the third current Wigan Athletic Under 18 player to compete at an international level, when he featured for Wales’ Under 17s team in a 5-0 victory over Malta at the Glyndwr University Racecourse Ground this week.

Kelland joins fellow goalkeeper Owen Evans (Wales Under 19s) and midfielder Adrian Purzycki (Poland Under 18s) with international recognition, after he was called up to Geraint Williams’ squad earlier this month.

Wales faced Malta twice at the Racecourse Ground, winning 5-0, in which Kelland played the full 90 minutes, and winning 5-1, with the young stopper an unused substitute.

The games were in preparation for UEFA Under 17 qualifiers taking place in October over in Belarus, against the host country, as well as Russia and Montenegro.

Kelland only joined Latics in the summer, and Academy Manager Gregor Rioch said the ‘keeper’s efforts and achievements are a testament to the player and the growing set up.

“Kelland has worked really hard since coming in, he’s settled well and his call-up is well deserved.

“Along with Owen and Adrian, Kelland has also shown how much the Academy here is progressing, and that’s an excellent sign for the club.”
