WIGAN ATHLETIC 1
Louis Robles added a fifth goal to his tally, but Latics fell short against what Peter Atherton described as a 'direct' style of play from hosts Walsall.
The score was level at half time, with Walsall's Levi Rowley picking up on a goalkeeper error and Robles hammering in from distance.
Reid and Shakespeare scored the goals for the young Saddlers, leaving Latics' coach Atherton with these words at full time.
"We didn't deal well enough with Walsall's direct style of play, but the lads will learn from that.
"Each game we learn knew things as a group and as individuals, there are promising times ahead this season once we get everything the way we want it."
