Latics opportunity to defend their Final Third Development League Cup crown was cut short after a 4-0 defeat away to Port Vale on Tuesday afternoon.

The Valiants took the lead a minute before half time after an even opening 43 minutes at Vale Park, and kicked on in the second half to score four before full time against an unfamiliar Latics side which featured five trialists.

It was a slow starting contest, which provided only two major flash points before Port Vale's opening goal, the first chance falling to Jonathan Kapend who broke free down the right, but only managed to wrap the ball around the back of Lee Nicholls' goal.

Jordan Flores struck Latics' first and best chance of the half after clever link up between Arnie Baxendale and Adrian Purzycki on the edge of the area, the latter teeing Flores up, with his low, left footed effort fizzing just wide of the right post.

Things looked to be heading a stalemate at the break, but with a minute remaining Dan Turner took advantage from a corner.  The ball dropped in the area and Latics were unable to clear, with the forward arriving to smash home from just inside the box.

Latics were forced into a change at the break after an injury to their trialist central defender saw Reece McNally introduced.

Eight minutes into the second half a similar follow-up shot doubled Port Vale's lead, with Lee Nicholls' punch to clear only going as far as Chekaine Steele who hammered a first time shot into the top right corner.

Louis Robles and Sam Cosgrove were introduced in the second half as Latics switched formation to accommodate two up front, but with 16 minutes remaining Port Vale added a third, Kapend barging his way down the middle to finish into the bottom right corner.

The host wrapped up their victory with five minutes remaining, Turner grabbing his second after clever footwork down the right and a tight-angled finish into the bottom right corner.
