Latics fell at the second to last hurdle on Wednesday afternoon as Christopher Park as Oldham Athletic progressed to the Youth Alliance Cup national final against MK Dons with a 3-1 victory, ending Latics' combined YA League and Cup unbeaten run.

Devante Jacobs powered the visitors into an early lead, with Ben Grant and Jordache Walters on target in the second half to push the game away from Latics.  Sam Cosgrove, returning from suspension, scored what turned out to be a mere consolation five minutes from time.

Oldham made it a struggle for Latics from the off, when a sliced clearance fell to Jacobs down the left side, and using his pace and power he brushed off two challenges before slamming the ball into the bottom left corner.

It was a rain soaked Christopher Park surface, and the skid of the ball off the turf made it difficult for Latics to get going, playing into Oldham's hands as they played a direct, running game.

Travelling Oldham supporters created a lively atmosphere pitch side as the game gathered pace, but neither side could find the net before half time, with Latics' goalkeeper Owen Evans on guard to deny the visitors twice.

Latics started brighter in the second half, but couldn't break down the Oldham defence, with the visitors doubling their lead on 62 minutes when Eddie Fulwood's cross found the head of Ben Grant who towered to find the bottom right corner.

Nine minutes later and Oldham pushed the game beyond Latics with their third of the afternoon, Jordache Walters winning possession on the edge of the box and thrashing into the bottom right corner for 3-0.

Latics' chance to make things interesting came 15 minutes from time when Cosgrove proved too strong for the defence, but couldn't cut the ball across the box for an unmarked Callum Lang, as keeper Paul Tyson got a touch to take the ball away.

Cosgrove did eventually pull one back with five minutes remaining, this time using his strength to attack down the right, before cutting his shot across the keeper and into the bottom left.

Victory for Oldham sees them through to face MK Dons in the national final, after the Dons won 2-1 against Cheltenham Town in the Southern section.
